Class Descriptions
Hatha Yoga
Hatha Yoga is the most popular branch of Yoga, from which many yogic styles originate. Hatha Yogis consider the body to be the vehicle for the soul. Through the use of physical postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), and meditation we bring the body into perfect health and allow for the more subtle spiritual elements of the mind to emerge fully. "Hatha" comes from the word "ha" which means sun, and "tha" which means moon. It is often translated as the branch of yoga that brings union of the pairs of opposites referring to the positive (sun) and negative (moon) currents in the system. Taught by Kathy Elder, this class is accessible to all levels, though it is recommended that students have a regular and ongoing yoga practice.
Yin Yoga
Yin Yoga is a very gentle, approach to mostly seated and reclining postures. It explores the energetic body through principles of Meridian theory, which is also the foundation of the science of Acupuncture. Yin Yoga is based on Dr. Hiroshi Motoyama's research, a Japanese Shinto priest whose research suggests that it is the connective tissue which provides life energy to all organs and cells of our bodies. It targets connective tissue specifically in a wide variety of easily accessible postures, held for long periods of time. Taught by Jared Owen Sam, this class is a wonderful beginning class for all levels, and is an excellent compliment to a more "yang" practice.
Gentle Yoga
Gentle Yoga offers modifications for those interested in the benefits of yoga at a gentler, easier pace. We explore standing as well as seated poses, twists, inversions, forward and back bends, in an easeful way, allowing time for rest and integration. A wonderful class for beginners to yoga, as well as for advanced students interested in a more mellow practice. Offered by Robinette Sherman as a morning class, gentle yoga provides a wonderful opportunity to awaken your body in a relaxed and rejuvenating way, gifting your muscles and cells with energy and peace to continue your day with.
Vinyasa Yoga
Vinyasa Yoga meaning "flow yoga" explores poses as sequences which connect and flow together in an uninterrupted wave of movements, initiated and carried out with the inhale and exhale of breath. The poses in a vinyasa sequence tend to be related in a fluid progression based on alignment, purpose and complexity. An effective sequence integrates all aspects of Yoga, physical, spiritual, and emotional and delivers each with balance, both independently and in union with each other. Taught by Jared Owen Sam, this class is designed for more experienced practitioners, who ideally already have an ongoing yoga practice.
Kundalini Yoga
Like the Earth, our bodies have two magnetic poles, one located in the crown chakra above the head, and the other in the base of the spine, which is our Kundalini, the energy that connects us with the Universe. When the Kundalini is awakened, the energy travels up the chakras, or energy centers of the body, and moves toward it's counterpart in the crown. Through Kundalini Yoga, the "yoga of awareness" we activate this energy to travel upward through our chakras and we move toward peace and enlightenment. Mostly directed through breath work, the kundalini practice also incorporates movement and asana (physical poses), bandhas (body locks), and mantra (healing sounds). Taught by Dennis Dehler.
Restorative Yoga
Restorative Yoga can be defined as "active relaxation." In a restorative class, we enter into poses (asanas) using a variety of props: blankets, straps, bolsters, chairs, tables, pillows, walls, and even other practitioners. Being supported and held by these props, one can experience deep relaxation and surrender of the body and mind, which leads to a divine rejuvenation and natural state of healing rest, renewal and equanimity. The deliciousness of this supported practice is that it allows the body to let go. Stress and tensions melt away and we experience balance from the inside out, moving us naturally toward overall peace and harmony. Taught by Kathy Elder.
Kirtan
Kirtan stems from one of the four paths of Yoga called Bhakti Yoga, the Yoga of devotion. During Kirtan we sing in a language called Sanskrit and we repeat the words or Mantras in beautiful and simple songs or chants. There is usually a leader of each chant who calls or sings out the words and the rest of the group responds. Sanskrit is said to be the language of the Gods and the most ancient of languages. The words themselves are created from the actual sound vibration of the object, making repetition of these words so powerful. Chanting these ancient Sanskrit Mantras helps to quiet our minds and to feel the love and peace that exists within our hearts. Offered by Robinette Sherman.
