This introductory massage course provides students with the fundamental skills and confidence required to perform a full-body relaxation massage using Swedish massage techniques. Students learn the purposes, effects, and contraindications of massage, as well as the history and current state of the massage profession. Practical knowledge of good hygiene, proper draping, and the use of bolsters is taught. Students learn to perform a full-body massage routine that includes the five basic Swedish strokes, and the importance of touch for well-being is discussed alongside discussions and exercises about trust and the creation of a safe, therapeutic relationship with clients. Efficient body mechanics and self-care for the student is emphasized, as well as communication and other skills such as centering, grounding, and presence that are essential for creating a positive massage experience.
