Life and Spirituality

Couples in Paradise Retreat

Joyce and Barry Vissell

During these 7 days at Kalani, you will not only open to more love and connection you thought possible, but you will have enough time to integrate these positive changes into your lives back home. We focus on seeing our partner with new eyes, healing dysfunctional patterns, communication of feelings, enhancing the sexual relationship, and practicing loving appreciation. Charley Thweatt’s intuitively chosen songs deepen each process.

About the Facilitator(s)

Marianne Williamson says “Bravo to the Vissells for helping us find the connection between spirituality and relationship.” Ram Dass describes Joyce and Barry Vissell as “a couple who live the yoga of love and devotion.” They are two people deeply in love for 49 years, who have led couples retreats for 35 years, raised three children and “walk their talk.” Their model of relationship and deeply heart-oriented approach have made a unique impact upon many thousands of people’s lives. They are the authors of The Shared Heart, Models of Love, Risk To Be Healed, The Heart’s Wisdom, Meant To Be, and A Mother’s Final Gift. They are the founders and directors of the Shared Heart Foundation (www.sharedheart.org), a non-profit organization dedicated to changing the world one heart at a time. The Vissells write a monthly column on 'living from the heart' that appears in about 80 publications worldwide.

“Special guest musician Charley Thweatt is a multi-talented singer, songwriter, and recording artist who has opened thousands of hearts around the world with his musical gifts. His intuitively chosen songs accelerate soul healing for the couples.”

About the Facilitator(s)

Lynne took her first yoga class while in college, at the YMCA in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Her first instructor and mentor, Trudy Davis, encouraged her to teach when she moved to Alaska in 1977.  She enrolled in the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco’s Teacher Training Program the summer of 1980. Encouraged by Donald Moyer, she attended her first yoga Intensive at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute in Pune, India in 1981. She was certified to teach yoga by BKS Iyengar in 1984. Subsequent trips to Pune followed in 1988 and 1997.

Lynne founded the Inner Dance Yoga Studio in 1982 in Anchorage, Alaska and oversaw  its growth and development into a thriving center with 20 plus instructors for the next 26 years . She  started the Inner Dance Teacher Training program in 1999 which  trained over 100 yoga teachers in the 8 years of her  oversight of the program.   Lynne sold the Inner Dance Yoga Studio in 2008.   She now travels the country and the world teaching yoga wherever she is invited.

Lynne  draws inspiration from yoga on and off the mat,  attending local classes and  sharing practice with others .  She honors her  teachers of  the Iyengar  tradition, Judith Lasater, Donald Moyer,  and  Fr. Joe Pereira .   Self-Realizaion Fellowship, Paramahansa Yogananda's organization, to which she was first exposed in 1978 is another continuing source of upliftment.

Yogananda says, "The true purpose of life is to realize one's Self as wisdom and bliss".   Patanjali's yoga sutra book II, sutra 41 (Light on Yoga Sutras, BKS Iyengar translation) states, " When the body is cleansed, the mind purified and the senses controlled, joyful awareness needed to realize the inner Self, also comes."  My mission statement is to help myself and others to awaken joyful awareness through the practices of yoga;   asanas that cleanse the body, pranayama that calms the mind, concentration that controls the senses, and meditation for realizing the Inner Self.

Lynne grew up in Wisconsin. Her love of travel and degree in Environmental Geology brought her to play and work in Alaska in 1975.  That year she met future husband, Jim , and together they made Alaska home. They have been married since 1978.  Together they enjoy camping, flying, overseas travel and their wonderful community of family and friends. Lynne also loves to sing, hula, play her ukelele,  garden, bike and hike. She is in the process of relocating to Prescott, Arizona.

BE AWESOME Retreat Hawai'i: Take Back Your Power

Tiffany Jentsch and Gail Daugherty

December 14, 2014 - December 19, 2014

About the Facilitator(s)

Tiffany has been traveling the world and leading motivational health seminars and workshops since 2009. After 4 years speaking on the newest and largest cruise ships in the world, she has found inspiration on the Big Island and now calls it home.

Living in Hawai'i has given Tiffany the opportunity to slow down and let this mysterious island work it's magic. Tiffany has been an international trainer and health coach since 2007 and has earned various certifications from the National Academy of Sports Medicine and the National Council on Strength and Fitness. She has also had the privilege to collaborate with some of the best health practitioners around the world.

Gail Daugherty, Licensed Acupuncurist, MBA, LAc, PhD (Holistic Nutrition)

Growing up overweight and often teased, Gailhas tried almost every diet imaginable. Cabbage soup diet? Yes. Lemon water and cayenne pepper drink? Atkins? Low fat? Low carb? All of the above. Becoming skeptical of every “quick fix” diet plan, she decided to get off the roller coaster and get in control.

Gail decided the best way to help herself was to study the human body and how the foods we consume affect how we feel and look. What she found was that food is meant to be enjoyed, not something that deserves embarrassment, guilt, or even eating tasteless meals. Starting her own healthy and delicious food catering business in Denver, Colorado in 1995, she taught and shared the joy of eating healthy and inspired people all over the world to begin enjoying food and living a healthy lifestyle.

Rounding out her desire to understand the human body, Gail studied another four years to become a Licensed Acupuncturist and Chinese Herbalist. She has taught at Santa Barbara College of Oriental Medicine and AOMA Academy of Oriental Medicine at Austin. She has given seminars around the world on the benefits of acupuncture. She has sought out and studied with the best pain management acupuncturist in the world. Her gentle technique can begin relieving pain and improving range of motion in just two needles.
