Health and Healing

Therapeutic Yoga Teacher Training Program 200 hr; Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga School

Liz Heffernan, Molly Masaoka and Dr. Sharon Karayianis

About the Facilitator(s)

Liz Heffernan, MA, E-RYT, PYT-1000, Integrative Yoga Therapy® (IYT) primary faculty member, is a certified IYT Therapist and yoga instructor of over 17 years. Liz brings a passion for therapeutics and extensive experience in the Hatha yoga systems of Kripalu, Ashtanga and Anusara. Her vision is to inspire teachers to share the healing practices of yoga with those motivated to seek a path of self-discovery and self-care.  Through a comprehensive application of bio-mechanical principles of alignment for deep therapeutic work, a strong focus on the breath and a heart expanding philosophy, she inspires her students toward greater degrees of freedom in body, mind and in spirit.

Molly Masaoka, E-RYT, Owner Yoga Centered, Yoga Teacher Training Faculty

Innately perceptive beyond her years, and wildly passionate about everything in her path, Molly applies a level of determination and delight that is truly one of a kind.   Her unique teaching style is both intense and focused but lightened with creativity, compassion and humor.  She believes that this balance of effort and surrender is the key to unlocking the awareness of ones true nature. A student of yoga since the age of 16, Molly has studied intensely with Chuck Miller, and completed teacher trainings with Annie Carpenter and Don Stapelton.  She credits Annie for giving her the skills to teach intentional alignment and sequencing, Don for the ability to encourage self-inquiry and Chuck for finding the unity in all things.  In addition to leading teacher trainings, workshops and retreats, Molly also owns Yoga Centered Studio and Boutique in Hilo, Hawaii. She is an influential member of her yoga community and serves as a mentor to both students and other teachers.  Ultimately she hopes to inspire others to share the practices of yoga that have so positively impacted her life.

Dr. Sharon Karayianis, MD attended medical school in Greece and practiced Pathology for 12 years. During that time she began teaching hatha yoga and studying Ayurveda part-time. In 1999 she made a change that she affectionately calls her "from death to life" transformation when she left the practice of Western medicine to study Ayurveda full-time with Dr. Vasant Lad in Albuquerque, NM. She spent 4 years at the Ayurvedic Institute as a student, yoga teacher and consultant in the Panchakarma Department. Two years teaching yoga in an ashram in India completed her life change and brought her home to the Big Island in 2005. She offers group and private classes and Ayurvedic lifestyle counseling.

Couples in Paradise Retreat

Joyce and Barry Vissell

We are excited to be leading our 27th Hawaii retreat at Kalani Oceanside Retreat. These retreats have exceeded all our expectations, and have been truly life-changing for each couple that has attended. We focus on seeing our partner with new eyes, healing dysfunctional patterns, renewal, communication, making amends for past hurts, deepening the sexual relationship, and filling the cup of love with our partner.

About the Facilitator(s)

Ram Dass calls Joyce and Barry Vissell “true bhaktis,” a couple who live the yoga of love and devotion. They are a nurse and medical doctor deeply in love for 46 years, who have raised three children and “walk their talk.” Their model of relationship and deeply heart-oriented approach have made a unique impact upon many thousands of people’s lives. As a result of the world-wide interest in their books, The Shared Heart, Models of Love, Risk To Be Healed, The Heart’s Wisdom, and Meant To Be, they have been conducting talks and workshops on relationship, parenting and personal growth. They are the founders and directors of the Shared Heart Foundation (www.sharedheart.org), a non-profit organization dedicated to changing the world one heart at a time. The Vissells write a monthly column on 'living from the heart' that appears in about 80 publications worldwide.

“Special guest musician Charley Thweatt is a multi-talented singer, songwriter, and recording artist who has opened thousands of hearts around the world with his musical gifts. His intuitively chosen songs accelerate soul healing for the couples.”

About the Facilitator(s)

Joy Ravelli started her business when she was 20 years old while pregnant with her first child, Nicholai. She dropped out of college where she had almost completed her Health Education degree and began to spend her time within the college by providing fitness, health, and nutrition coaching to the staff and students. Soon Joy was leading her "Health In Motion" programs at several colleges and corporations throughout Massachusetts. She had her second child, Alexander, at the age of 23. She ran this business successfully in Massachusetts for 20 years. In 1999 Joy took her life long passion for Yoga into the center of her offerings and in 2004 while pregnant with her third child, Maleeha she created the Purusha Yoga School. The Purusha Yoga School has graduated over 300 students in both 200 hour and 500 hour Yoga Alliance and International Association of Yoga Therapists Recognized programs.

Family SkiingJoy founded the Purusha Seva Project i2008. The Purusha Seva Project became a 501C-3 Non-Profit organization in 2009. Joy says, "I wanted to create a vehicle..." (click here to continue reading about the Purusha Seva Project)

Joy completed writing a practical guide to the Yoga Sutras in 2009 and looks forward to it being published soon. She is currently writing other practical guides for her students to navigate their way through the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita. "Writing helps me to understand these practices and has always been a way of expressing my deeper ideas and feelings."

Joy opened the Purusha Yoga Studio in San Francisco in 2011 as a way of providing opportunities for her teachers to share and grow while also nourishing a local community with a wide variety of classes, programs, and a place to gather and celebrate together.

The true spark of light that ignited the studio was the death of her son Alex in 2009.

"Alex has always been a source of great inspiration and guidance in this life. He continues to help me and our community understand the truth that is beyond our small perspective and seek the light and love of an existence without fear, hatred, and worry. Ultimately- my children have and always will be my greatest teachers, for they have taught me to let go of fear and let it all be love."

This is the true path of yoga: to let go of our head trip and connect to what is real. In the end there is only love.

Joy is certified in the following modalities:

  • Personal Trainer (ACE, AFFA)
  • Pilates (Physical Mind Institute)
  • Yoga (Frog Pond School, RYT 500 Yoga Alliance)
