Yin/Insight Yoga Silent Retreat : The Four Immeasurables

Sarah and Ty Powers

January 4, 2015 - January 10, 2015

About the Facilitator(s)

Sarah Powers

Sarah Powers

Sarah began teaching in 1987. She is the co-founder of the Insight Yoga Institute with her husband Ty and author of Insight Yoga, which interweaves Yoga, Buddhism, Taoism, and Transpersonal Psychology into an integral practice to discover and enliven the body, heart and mind. Her yoga style blends both a Yin sequence of floor poses to enhance the meridian and organ systems with an alignment-based slow flow or Yang practice, influenced by Viniyoga, Ashtanga, Iyengar and Qigong teachings. Sarah feels that enlivening the physical and pranic bodies, as well as learning to meet our psychological reactivity is paramount for preparing one to deepen and nourish insights into one’s essential nature–a natural state of awareness.  She draws from her studies in Transpersonal Psychology, as well as her in-depth training in the Vipassana, Tantric and Dzogchen practices of Buddhism. Her main influences have been Tsoknyi Rinpoche, Jennifer Welwood, Lama Tsultrim Allione, Bhante Gunaratana, Lama Pema Dorje, Stephen and Martine Batchelor and B. Alan Wallace. Sarah leads trainings and silent retreats with her husband Ty.

See detailed description of Insight Yoga coursework.

Ty has been practicing Buddhism for many years under the guidance of Dzogchen teacher Tsoknyi Rinpoche, psychospiritual teachers Jennifer Welwood and John Welwood, B. Alan Wallace, Stephen and Martine Batchelor and Jack Kornfield. He has also been influenced by many Spirit Rock teachers, most notably, Ajahn Amaro and completed the Spirit Rock Community Dharma Leader training program in 2003. Ty has taught daylong retreats at Spirit Rock and other Dharma centers on issues concerning cultural diversity. He is also a mentor to numerous men and women around the globe.

About the Facilitator(s)

Lynne took her first yoga class while in college, at the YMCA in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Her first instructor and mentor, Trudy Davis, encouraged her to teach when she moved to Alaska in 1977.  She enrolled in the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco’s Teacher Training Program the summer of 1980. Encouraged by Donald Moyer, she attended her first yoga Intensive at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute in Pune, India in 1981. She was certified to teach yoga by BKS Iyengar in 1984. Subsequent trips to Pune followed in 1988 and 1997.

Lynne founded the Inner Dance Yoga Studio in 1982 in Anchorage, Alaska and oversaw  its growth and development into a thriving center with 20 plus instructors for the next 26 years . She  started the Inner Dance Teacher Training program in 1999 which  trained over 100 yoga teachers in the 8 years of her  oversight of the program.   Lynne sold the Inner Dance Yoga Studio in 2008.   She now travels the country and the world teaching yoga wherever she is invited.

Lynne  draws inspiration from yoga on and off the mat,  attending local classes and  sharing practice with others .  She honors her  teachers of  the Iyengar  tradition, Judith Lasater, Donald Moyer,  and  Fr. Joe Pereira .   Self-Realizaion Fellowship, Paramahansa Yogananda's organization, to which she was first exposed in 1978 is another continuing source of upliftment.

Yogananda says, "The true purpose of life is to realize one's Self as wisdom and bliss".   Patanjali's yoga sutra book II, sutra 41 (Light on Yoga Sutras, BKS Iyengar translation) states, " When the body is cleansed, the mind purified and the senses controlled, joyful awareness needed to realize the inner Self, also comes."  My mission statement is to help myself and others to awaken joyful awareness through the practices of yoga;   asanas that cleanse the body, pranayama that calms the mind, concentration that controls the senses, and meditation for realizing the Inner Self.

Lynne grew up in Wisconsin. Her love of travel and degree in Environmental Geology brought her to play and work in Alaska in 1975.  That year she met future husband, Jim , and together they made Alaska home. They have been married since 1978.  Together they enjoy camping, flying, overseas travel and their wonderful community of family and friends. Lynne also loves to sing, hula, play her ukelele,  garden, bike and hike. She is in the process of relocating to Prescott, Arizona.

Awakening Yoga, Shamanic Journey, Meditation & Adventure

Hope Johnson, Jill Walton and Kristen Coyle

This retreat is a playful, intensive and intimate exploration focused on awakening the mind to the Heart’s truth, so that the uniquely creative, happy, powerful and authentic Self may be expressed fully in this Lifetime. We will explore how all relationships reflect our One relationship with Life. Discoveries in this regard can result in immediate and lasting clarity with respect to all personal relationships, physical health, mental well-being, creative outlets, career path, and all other aspects of being human.

About the Facilitator(s)

Hope Johnson:

Hope Johnson is a joyful, playful lover of all, who previously had a “normal” life of discontent, struggle and dis-ease. She facilitates this retreat as an offering to the one Spirit whose only purpose is to restore the mind to its original state of joy and innocence.

Hope offers no specific teaching or philosophy. She offers herself, as a local to the Puna area, she facilitates daily group excursions; and she allows the wisdom that comes through Loving have its way with each person on the retreat.

Having been through many common forms of delusion, Hope has access to a wealth of experience and insight ready to be shared while on excursions, during meals, by the pool, etc. www.thewaytotheway.com.

Jill Walton

Jill was born with an intuitive gift and a desire to be of service. At a young age she was sought out as a confidant and adviser. Throughout the years, Jill discovered that everyone had, within themselves, the abilities they needed to resolve their problems.

So she began focusing on helping people uncover their inner wisdom in order to empower them to become masters of their own wellbeing. With deep trust in her Guidance, Jill brings her experience, complete attention, full-bodied focus and keen intuition to every situation.

She offers a loving, compassionate, nonjudgmental environment to foster true and deep sharing. Jill presents new perspectives and possibilities that often open the way to empowerment, change, renewal, and inspiration.

Kristen Coyle

From a young age Kristen has been a gifted empath and pursued a deeper connection with Source through nature, movement, dance, art, and relating. She started practicing yoga and traveling in 1992. It was on a journey hitch hiking through Mexico, when she found herself standing on her head with a few Kora Indiginistas, that she recognized the power of yoga to connect people worldwide. This awakened in her the desire to facilitate healing in any way that moved through her.

Her main focus in life became practicing and living her yoga, travelling, and connecting with people from all cultures on a heart level. These experiences have transformed her life and elevated her yoga teaching from asana based experiences to Transformational Flow.
