Educational Festivals, 100 annual events, 50 weekly activities and
Land Use Commission special use approval for augmented provisions of aqua-agriculture, education, employment, energy, recreation, safety, supplies and services.
It is a pleasure to provide this letter in support for Kalani's Educational Festivals, 100 annual events, 50 weekly activities and Land Use Commission special use approval for consolidated and expanded educational retreat operations.
Kalani has been an important anchor, both economically and socially in the Puna district as a model of sustainability, while combining tourism, cultural and natural preservation, community service and education in a district that endures poverty and its related challenges.
I have collaborated with Kalani's innovative team on previous projects, and I continue to be inspired by their ability to attract people from diverse backgrounds to successfully create meaningful projects while fostering deeper understanding both amongst the participants, and their audiences - the surrounding community and thousands of Hawai`i, national, and international visitors.
Please support Kalani's important projects on Hawai`i, the Big Island. Kalani has the experience, the resources, and the passion to drive agritourism, while incorporating a reverence for the āina and native Hawaiian culture. I very much support their educational programs and leadership in sustainable community. I am excited about the opportunities for public education and international understanding that these programs provide.
We here at Kalani are very grateful for whatever support you can provide. Letters are very helpful and deeply appreciated. Since Kalani Honua, Inc. is an IRS 501(c)3 educational charity, contributions are tax deductible.
Please e-mail your letter to Richard.Koob@kalani.com or mail to 12-6860 Kalapana-Kapoho Beach Road, Pahoa, HI 96778.
Your letter supports…
· Augmented provisions of aqua-agriculture, education, employment, energy, recreation, safety, supplies and services consistent with Kalani’s 38 years of operation and its as much as 400 year ahupua’a heritage as a collaborative community center, including preserved halau (school) and heiau (temple) sites. The augmented provisions and facilities will generate solar power, include a community fire department, be non-profit plus local farmer and vendor cooperatively operated, and be special use monitored rather than commercially zoned – thereby helping provide for Kalapana to Pohoiki local residents’ needs.
· A 30 year extension of Kalani’s 36 successful years as a sustainable agrarian retreat community model providing nature, culture and wellness educational facilities and programs; over 100 events per year, 50 activities per week.
· 20 eco-efficient retreat units, made from renewable bamboo and wood, requiring no artificial heating or cooling. Expanding upon the currently approved 13 units, each unit has 6 bedrooms to accommodate faculty, staff and guest students.
