Dearest Kalani Ohana-

Not one usually at a loss for words, I struggle to vocalize what my heart and soul feels. My time at Kalani is sacred to me, it transforms me, nourishes me, strengthens me, and fills me with blissful peace. The land serenades me with her gorgeous elegance, Pele humbles me, and each and every one of you touches me with your unique beauty.

I am blessed to have found you, to have experienced you, to have been loved by you. Mahalo to each smile, each hug, each sunrise, each sunset, each spray of salty ocean mist, and every moment of my time in your presence. You are all a rainbow of hope to me, thank you for filling my heart with your sunshine...I miss you. I love you.

I dedicate this poem to you, to Kalani, to my renewed sense of life, and to every person who knows that miracles do happen...Kalani as my guide and you as my encouragement and support. Nearly lost, I have found my spirit once again.

The Storm

Clouds thicken and suffocate her empty heart like smoke in a lonely bar
Desperate, unheard, the soul leaves her temple
Lost and alone, droplets of rain fall like weights in her psyche
Emotions seep in, her portal of pain is flung open
Vulnerable, raw...it hurts
Fearful but curious, she reaches deep to find a flicker of hope
Soon blazing like a campfire flame, energy begins to pump through her veins
Churning, burning, there is life
The clouds clear, the rain ceases, sun breaks through
Her heart blossoms like a flower at dawn
A full rainbow emerges, she steps into her light

I will call it a blur
But it has meant more than that
I've been dropping
Pieces of my past
Everywhere

Making room
Becoming lighter

I've sacrificed
Layer of my hands
Sometimes, my heart
To feel

To recognize
Groves in the coral
Colors in the sky
Hints of pain, in every pupil

I've watched
Patient surfers
Wait for a wave
Lava
Break the surface

I've witnessed
Angles
In every face
Soften

Leaving
My shoes at the door
Among other things
Revising the plan
Using an eraser
To sharpen today's picture
Gently blowing
Shavings of cruelty
From the page

Seeing
How beautiful we are
When we're destroyed

Realizing
How many hands it takes
To put one person
Back together

This year I intend to fall in love with everyone

This year I intend to love you

This year I intend to respect you

This year I intend to cry when I need to, to laugh when I want to, and to smile through it all

This year I intend to give my heart to you at every moment

This year I intend to be in love at all times

This year I intend to be thankful for this perfect feeling

This year I intend to look around in awe, and to feel blessed that this beautiful world was made for us to love together

This year I intend to try to have more and more compassion

This year I intend to kill fewer bugs

This year I intend to be gentle with myself. I intend to make mistakes

This year I intend to laugh at your jokes, and to have more fun

This year I intend to take life less seriously, to smile in the face of stress, and to laugh if I catch myself being too intense

This year I intend to floss more regularly

This year I intend to make decisions from the heart, and to work towards all of my dreams

This year I intend to listen to myself

This year I intend to revert back to childhood; to play more games, to dance more often, to sing out loud

This year I intend to make new friends, and to be a better friend to those I already have

This year I intend to sit down next to strangers and to ask their names and to smile and shake their hand or hug them and to try really hard to remember their names

This year I intend to be more thankful

This year I intend to pray

This year I intend to have a practice: to sit alone in silence everyday, to cultivate a quiet mind, and to listen for the voice of god

This year I intend to be more mindful of my actions: to hold my tongue from sharp words, and to stop my pen from harsh critique

This year I intend to kiss and hug more often and to let myself be loved

This year I intend to ask God for guidance

This year I intend to live in peace

This year I intend to be more helpful

This year I intend to be a better son and brother

This year I intend to be a kinder, gentler lover

This year I intend to tell the truth

This year I intend to listen: to really hear you when you talk about your dreams, and to help you make your dreams come true

This year I intend to be of service

This year I intend to be myself in every way

This year I intend to love you

Since I arrived at Kalani a little over a month ago, I have felt a surge of creativity flowing through me. Perhaps it is Pele, the Goddess gracing this island, the alive landscape, the people… I can say for sure that I am feeling joy and presence more than ever before and for that I am grateful. This is a poem written in an inspired moment~

Grace bestows bounty to beautify
inner fires stoked by passion,
lessons in creation moving
from sorrow into change…
The harvest has come;
it is time to reclaim the wild.

Inability to constrict means
deep breathing into all aspects
which might have seemed scary.

Don’t want to relay the message
of truth today because
the mosaic keeps shifting
which lifts yet another veil
from my wondering eyes
now wandering the room.

Come from cocoon to full bloom
the butterfly sees far beyond the times,
settled down with transcendence
finding floetic rhythm of expansion
that means more than we know.

Humanness creeps in
deeply blending former selves
as an integration
of beauty and wealth
the abundance is astounding when
the echoes are left
to resound around the room
without pauses.

Actions have set cause into effect,
the sensual revolution
gaining respect with the
checking in of rebellious spirit
reflecting reasons beyond
the seasonal cycles which
predict us all.

We are falling
into realms beyond.

I am blessed out to realize
I know nothing,
humbling bowing before this wave~
a warrior of the heart
emerging from her cave.

PeleHer steam seeps through cracks beneath my feet.

I feel her heat, her presence, her obsidian self.
a loosening, a spiraling,
a channel of new growth, rebirth,
rebuilding, renewed.

My spirit cliff
-- sharply God-carved --
caves to ocean depths below.

A loosening, unfolding fire!

She is my past, my future,
my holy present:
Middle earth breaking free —-

Creation from nothing,
from everything?
Imagine!

Some parts of her harden, while the
rest widen my pulse.
my breath, my spirit…
        awe,
                awe,
                        awe,
                                Awakening!

She rolls over edges,
boiling to meet her destiny:
the wet Goddess.
fickle and eager for embrace.

It is made holy:

This is a white lucid awakening; an archaic fire of no-time kind;
a river of rock; a molten prayer resounding,
a coming into one’s own and out of one’s unknown.

She moves me ever forward, deeper,
        down,
                over,
                        past,
                                present,
a silent prayer emerges.

Waves encompass her,
joining her in glorious exuberance.

She is met and made whole, solid.

Birth of a brand new earth:
less than a second old…
Imagine!

Yet she has shifted my consciousness
into no time,
no beginning,
no end.

How magnified is this now,
now!

Charlie Bonnin

Charlie BonninOh, Kalani, an interesting place.
Where every turn,
Reveals a new face.

The balance that shifts over,
And over again.
Just when you had realized,
You had made a new friend.

It's time to go,
New places to be.
For some go back to their old life,
Their old reality.

Don't mourn their departure,
And don't mourn your leaving.
Just take what you have learned,
And store it for safe keeping.

For a moment you may feel a loss,
You may feel you can not cope,
And in bed you may toss.

Just take a deep breath,
Lie quiet and still.
Remember the palm trees,
Up on the hill.
The ocean's churning,
Mountains covered with snow.
Pele's eruptions,
The people you got to know.

With this thought,
In heart and mind.
You just might find,
That peaceful place,
Not even time can erase.

And when you are there,
Breath deep,
The remembered air.
Let go of your cares,
And smile at the moments
That you shared.

The love of life shines in me like billions of stars.
Each star a person whose soul described the divinity.
As I look at each brightly light its luminosity outshines its name.
All I see is the uniqueness of its interaction with my universe.
Each one thinking they hide something from me, but they cannot.
The place where we are one cannot be hidden.
I see it as clearly as I see my hand because it is my hand and my fingers and my heart.
It’s me just as much.
I thank them for their part in the script we play together.
My character cannot play itself without all the others.
I rejoice of my good fortune to be part of this grand play and to me myself in the brilliant light of all those stars.
You, who sit in front of me, are those brilliant lights.
You are a facet in the diamond of pure mind.
Never apologize for who you are.
You are unique.
You are divine.
You are the essence of Love and of life.
I could not imagine an existence so mundane as one without you.
Thank you for everything you are.

There is a secret at Kalani,
and ... 'most everybody knows it!

flowerWhen you come here, you change.
You release the past of stress and inhibition.

And release the YOU...
The you so deeply yearning to be free.

Free ... free to express in each moment,
whatever comes, whatever feels, whatever is
the essence of your true Self in that moment in time.

The old timers,
they just watch and wait ...
To see the newcomer bite on the Kalani bait.

And after the seed is planted,
the essential flower grows,
unfurls its delirious petals of many colors,
and sticks out its tongue in delight!

Kalani `Ohana

Winter SolsticeUnder the direction of Mavis Muller, an Artist-in-Residence from Alaska, a team of volunteers collaborated in the weaving of a large 'wishing bell' basket which was installed in the Buddha Grove.

After a dedication ceremony in the afternoon, with poems, chants and story weaving, Mavis and volunteers created a spiral luminaria, each beautifully adorned with an original bamboo painting by Shola.

After the nearly-full moon rose on the Winter Solstice, volunteers danced in a rhythmic procession through the lighted spiral to celebrate the Solstice and the new installation.

May the warmth of the memories we shared keep us illuminated and connected. May the energy generated that night spiral ever outward with the spirit of aloha!

Wishing Bell Invitation

Wishing BellAll are invited to interact with this woven 'wishing bell'
in your own personal way.

Decorate the outside with found objects from nature.

Use the materials provided in this box, leaves and markers.
(Please close it again when you are finished.)

Write down your wishes.

Write your sentiments on a leaf, or paper fold it up and tuck it inside the basket in the theme of:

  • manifestation for the upcoming year;

  • wishes for wellness for yourself, loved ones, for all of creation;

  • things you are grateful for;

  • anything that you would like to release, to make way for new beginnings, etc.....

On January 1, 7:30 pm, at this location, the Buddha Grove,
the 'wishing bell' basket will meet it's conclusion through fire.
The basket will burn, respectfully releasing all of your heartfelt messages.

Something has ended. Something has begun.

This interactive art project is facilitated by Mavis Muller, Homer, Alaska, and is the tenth in a series. mavismullerart.com

Invocation
by Mavis Muller

Corn,
symbol of abundance,
food for the present,
seeds for the future.
With the corn rattle,
we lift and scatter,
to all the directions,
the needs and desires,
of all humanity,
and all of creation,
we do this with trust,
knowing in our hearts,
that we will be provided for.

Gourd,
symbol of gratitude,
opening hearts,
expanding compassion.
With the gourd rattle,
we lift and scatter,
to all the directions,
our joyful gratitude,
for the blessings in our lives,
the beauty of our purpose,
the bounty of the Earth.
we do this with love,
our ultimate treasure.
