Making Space...
When I arrived at Kalani in January 2006, it was with the intention of being here more or less permanently. Still, it seems amazing to me that two and a half years have passed! Time is both fast and slow here in Puna on the Big Island; days are filled with the quickness of so many experiences, and the slowness of just being. Kalani means many things to all the guests, volunteers and staff who pass through here. To me, Kalani is about making space.
We make space in our crazy-busy modern lives to be here, and explore new experiences. We make healing space in our bodies through yoga and dance. We make space in our minds, too. We change our focus from all the world's goings-on to the simple pleasures of sharing good food with friends, of sharing daily activities, of sharing with each other the knowledge we have learned.
We make space for wonderment through swimming with dolphins, watching the lava flow into the sea, standing on top of Mauna Kea in the clearest air in the world to gaze at the stars.
We make space in our hearts through our commitment to aloha, respect for one another, and 'ohana, the joy of extended family.
We make space for creativity through music, dance, art, clothes, and in as many ways as we can think of!
We make space to grow ourselves. It is the gift of Kalani, of this special island, given to everyone who comes here.
aloha,
paul
